I'm surprised that neither movie has really made it known that he has been in love with Emma since she was around 13. Mr. Knightley says it in the novel: "I could not think about you so much without doting on you, faults and all; & by dint of fancying so many errors, have been in love with you ever since you were thirteen at least." It's a good movie, just wish the characters were like the book more.
