A backpacking trip I did a couple of years ago.

Random copied & pasted stuff about world tickets that probably won't interest you:

Round the World Tickets Explained
"Around the world tickets" (a.k.a 'Round the World' or 'RTW' tickets) are a series of single flights built into one ticket. Valid for 12 months - this ticket literally takes you "Around the World" making this one of the cheapest way to do a big trip.

How do they work?

Simple - choose the regions / countries you want to visit. You can build your own ticket - for example - the most popular route is:

London, UK » Los Angeles, USA » Fiji » Cook Islands » New Zealand » Sydney, Australia » Singapore (make your own way to) Bangkok, Thailand » London, UK

Price Guide

Basic routes (4-6 stops) leaving off peak (April-August) cost as little as £800 (incl. taxes*)
Many stops on many Continents leaving at peak times (Nov-Dec) could cost £2,500+ all-in
Most people: leave Sept, Oct, Jan-March and pay £1,500-£1,800 (incl. taxes*)

How do I get started?

The easiest way to start your plans is to browse for Around the World Flights or download the Around the World Travel Planner and decide what you would like to see and do on your travels.
Once you have a rough idea, get in touch with the experts

RTW tickets are almost universally offered by airline alliances such as SkyTeam, Star Alliance and Oneworld, or else by specialist travel agencies that will spend time helping customise a trip to the consumer's needs.
They are priced according to class of service, origin of travel, number of continents, mileage (usually between 30,000 and 60,000 km), and sometimes season of travel. The traveller benefits from the large and optimised network of the airline alliance and can participate in the alliance's frequent flyer programs. However, these tickets are usually subject to restrictions. The number of stops is usually restricted to 5-16, and backtracking between continents (especially Europe/Asia) is often restricted. The dates and journey do not have to be pre-planned, but may be changed en route at a local office of any airline in the alliance (although a change of destinations often results in an additional fee). Prices vary but are generally in the range of $3000-5000 USD for an economy class ticket.

  • @gothatfunk genuinely one of the biggest lessons i learned was not to leave you card in the atm while your trying to sort out your money. It sucked it back in after about 10 seconds. I had a couple of days trying to get it back, whilst having no money live on. Not the best situation to be in.

But also I learned that we're all the same ie we're just trying to get through life, and eat, and be happy etc

  • that's an amazing journey, bet you learned a lot.

  • @bresophil The trip was over half a year. I ran out of both money and energy unfortunately

  • @madboyka I have considered it. I made 5 DVD's worth of me prattling on to the camera as I invariably had no idea where I was going. It's possible, I'd probably put it on a different channel though.
