Cheers, tears and celebrations from families and friends greeted the latest soldiers retuning from Afghanistan.
After an intense and hard fought tour, soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment and The Light Dragoons, returned to their barracks across the UK.
The Worcetsershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment deployed to Afghanistan in April. During its tour the Regiment rebadged to form the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment. The Battalion had an extremely testing time in Helmand Province where they were instrumental in establishing local governance in Gereshk, providing and environment where the local population were able to return to their homes. The soldiers were also involved in intense fighting in the 'Green Zone' where they were able to assume a dominant position, reducing the enemy to mounting indirect attacks.
Soldiers of 'B' squadron, who returned on October 23, are the final element of the Light Dragoons Regiment to return home from Afghanistan.
The Light Dragoon soldiers first deployed to Afghanistan in October 2006 and have since completed a yearlong commitment. Throughout the last 12 months, the Light Dragoons have been at the very forefront of the fight against the Taliban. Based in Camp Bastion, in Helmand Province, they have conducted a series of dangerous patrols across the length and breadth of the Province, which have routinely lasted up to three weeks. Soldiers from B Squadron have been in contact with the enemy on more than 40 occasions during their six-month deployment.
Nicknamed England's Northern Cavalry, The Light Dragoons have had an arduous and challenging tour. With temperatures reaching 50 Celsius, the soldiers endured the searing heat while operating in their Scimitar and Spartan armoured vehicles.
More than a 100 soldiers of The Light Dragoons received their tour medals at a special parade day ceremony, held on October 25. It is a significant day for the Regiment -- marking the 153rd anniversary of the Battle of Balaklava, which saw its mounted forebears, the 13th Light Dragoons, take part in the fateful Charge of the Light Brigade.
