they are buddhist monks, the shaolin monks were just monks that were taught to fight to defend the temples from raiders. they werent really warriors because they wanted to be more defensive than agressive. they still practice to preserve the arts and because even if you're not carrying a broadsword you can substitute it with your hands or something stick-like, like an umbrella. great excersise too. :)
