@iverburl Rescued greys most likely have never encountered stairs in their lives. Think back (if you can) to YOU learning how to manage stairs...and you've only got TWO legs, and your brain was still plastic at that young age. These guys have to figure it all out as adults. There's nothing dark about it, it's just something they've never encountered before. I think Hurb is a very logical dog...he remembers what worked going down, and just does it in reverse to get back up. GOOD doggie!
FYI, iverburl, if you search on YouTube using the words "stairs dog backwards", you'll find several videos of dogs of other breeds doing the same thing. They are unlikely to be doing it because of "an absurdly unnatural life" or to have "an arguably neglectful history".
Racers are allowed to do what comes natural - run... run really fast!! Lighten up. This is just one way a dog solves a problem, lol. I think he's a genius :-))
Is Hurb a rescued retired racer? Racing greys lead such an absurdly unnatural life that no behavior is surprising. He goes down forwards, correct? Patient training can help him overcome this unfortunate habit. Perhaps in the intervening 3 years it already has.
Personal opinion: A dog's odd behavior because of an arguably neglectful history is interesting, and darkly amusing. Not sure if I'd ever call it cute.
i think its because of their physique, they have long legs and a long snout, maybe they are afraid of falling backwards as they elevate their front legs
I have two greys who are not comfortable with stairs at all even though they are carpeted! To say that all greyhounds are comfortable with stairs and run up and down is certainly not the norm! Looking at this video doesn't make me think its a trick but rather a greyhound like mine not enjoying stairs and being clever. I wonder if my greys would learn this by watching him...
lol...to cute! Greys are the best. My girl Ginger will be 8 in January, and we've had for 4 years. It was quite comical when we first got her and watched her learning how to do the stairs. Now she whips up and down them like nothing
@Jons01 Are you serious? You think that dog feels it can handle the stairs better going backwards than forward? I too have two greyhounds. I too have stairs. My dogs run up and down the stairs all day long like it's nothing. I am around other greyhounds besides mine all the time. Greyhounds do not feel comfortable merely just backing up on level ground. But you're telling me this dog wants to walk backwards up the stairs on it's own, without being trained to do so? You've got to be joking.
