EUFOR Chad/RCA-EU Peacekeeping in Action
About the speech:
Lt General Nash discussed his experience as Operation Commander for the recent EU peacekeeping mission to Chad(EUFOR Chad/RCA). The year long mandate for the mission was successfully completed in March 2009 when control was transferred to the UN. Lt Nash gave an overview of the historical origins of the conflict in Central Africa and the factors underlying the EU decision to deploy a 3700 strong force to the region in March 2008. Ireland contributed over 450 troops, the second largest contingent after France, to the mission.
Lt Nash discussed the issues which arose over the course of the mission and conclude with lessons for EU Peacekeeping missions going forward.
About the speaker:
Lieutenant General Nash, recently retired, has over 40 years experience of service with the Irish Defence Forces both at home and abroad. He was recently awarded Frances prestigious Légion d'Honneur in recognition of his achievement as Operation Commander for the successful EU peacekeeping mission to Chad. Prior to this, he has had a wide range of overseas experiences primarily with United Nations Forces in Cyprus and the Lebanon, but also as a staff officer with the European Union Monitoring Mission in the Western Balkans in 1996.
