Mangala as in Sanskrit means auspicious (or lucky) and Acharan means conduct of life. In totality, Mangalacharan is an obeisance offered at the start of the dance recital by the dancer at the feet of Lord Jagannath. Mangalacharan includes the 'bhumi pranam' -- where the dancer begs forgiveness to Mother
Earth for stamping on her. "Mata Marakata Shyama" is a sloka in praise of the Goddess Saraswati. It is concluded by the 'trikhandi pranam' or the threefold salutation - the first one above head towards God, the second in front of the face for the Guru, and the third in front of the chest for the audience.
