Is there life on Mars? Dr. Sagan takes viewers on a tour of the red planet first through the eyes of science fiction authors, and then through the unblinking eyes of two Viking spacecrafts that have sent thousands of pictures of the stunning Martian landscape back to Earth since 1976. Though based on older Mars missions, Sagan's analysis still holds true.

  • What a pity that Sagan did not live to see the actual Mars rover in action.

"Billions of people could watch the unfolding adventure on their television sets..."

I'm almost happy to see that Sagan did not live to see the fact that when it actually happened, the vast majority of people were far more interested in watching the drama unfold on Survivor on their television sets than they were the exploration of a different planet.

  • Ithaca resident and Cornell Prof. Steve Squyres won the Sagan Medal part, for his work on that Mars in rover and in getting the public involved in it. (Oct. 2009)

  • 2 days ago, NASA launched the most sophisticated martian explorer yet. As big as a jeap, it has its own onboard lab and a nuclear battery. :)

  • That would be awesome if a homunculus came out of the mixture Sagan stirred.

  • One wonders how the initial exterior of Viking 1's landing were simulated!

  • It's depressing to know how optmestic Sagen was...

The Spirit rover was never that amazing, atleast not to the general public.

  • I loved that bare bones, 70s era rover in this part, has got nothing on the MSL.

  • We'll remember those who prepared the way!

  • thank you for clarifying that you were citing the very video you commented on

  • So awesome
