This week Pakistan was named to chair the governing body of International Atomic Energy Agency-IAEA and today in Dateline Washington, we are examining the illicit trade of nuclear materials and how Pakistan simultaneously, being a nuclear power and a hotbed of extremism can play a role in stopping this trade.
Pakistan like India is not a signatory of Non Proliferation Treaty. A few experts in Washington are positive that Pakistani government was not involved in the secret trade of nuclear designs and material to Libya, North Korea or Iran back in the 80s and after dismantling the network of Dr AQ Khan-the founder of Pakistan's nuclear program this secret trade has been put to a halt. They also think that Pakistan's nuclear weapons are in the safe hands. However, they think that to ensure nuclear non-proliferation, it is imperative to safeguard all the classified information regarding the nuclear programs or bomb making which Pakistan started to realize only after the revelations about AQ Khan's network in 2004. David Albright, a physicist and president of the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) and Matthew Kroenig-Assistant Professor at Georgetown University and a research fellow with the Harvard University have been interviewed while sound bites of two Pakistani analysts Naeem Salik and Pervez Hoodbhoy have also been included in this 7:30 minute detailed report.
