Lili Tuwai is a writer and an advocate for survivors of child abuse. Her work aims to assist in Breaking the Silence on abuse through poetry & short stories..other works include topics of love, hope, inspiration & empowerment.

Playground Contemplation

Some days deep in contemplation
she weighs up certain deeds
pulling her down
like he did during her young days.
Breathing in his intoxication
she experienced a different childhood
along the sliding scale of life.

How strange it is she thinks
that somersaults in spring
can fade to summer assaults
in any weather
and how a familiar face
offering his umbrella as cover
can over-shadow innocence.

Is it not bizarre she reflects
a child in play doing flips
can be flipped from childhood
through another's turn
onto uneven ground
and how adults holding hands
can gaze in a different direction.

Some days in contemplation
skipping childhood memories
she jumps as jagged fragments fall
fitting disturbances in place
and missing pieces into an old puzzle
needing completion
in hope self-hate will fade.

She often thinks how odd it is
present days can be suddenly twisted
or bent out of shape
through games of hide and seek
by those who prefer to build castles
and bury truth in the sand.

Most days in silence she slips within
To question if past acts of child abuse
can ever leave one unscathed
in a world that loves make believe
and punishes children telling tales.
In the jungle gym of her mind,
she yearns for that hour of liberation.

  • This is amazing, thought provoking, hard hitting, excellently written and expressed. Confronting an issue people would rather not think about, and in doing so making it impossible to ignore. A wonderful cause, making people look and think through their discomfort. Poems like this can change the world and people. Faved.
