The Ponies of Chincoteague

On the shores of the Mid-Atlantic, a tradition exists which is a vestige of times gone by. Each summer, the wild ponies of Assateague Island are migrated to the island of Chincoteague, Virginia, swimming across a narrow stretch of sea, a sight unique in nature. For decades, the Chincoteague Fire Department has overseen the welfare of this rare herd, and during the week of its world-renowned pony swim, runs a pony auction which generates much of the Fire Departments funds.

Inside Information was there to witness it all in 2009. Spending a week alongside the world-famous Saltwater Cowboys of Chincoteague, HRTV now brings you on a journey through the wild and into the hearts of a small town. From the hundreds of seasoned riders, spending dawn to dusk rounding up wild horses on Assateague Island, to the faces of the little girls hoping to own their first pony at the auction, the story of The Ponies of Chincoteague will captivate and amaze you.
