The rains are back after a long dry spell. Well many farmers complained they would not get anything from their farms, but the rains pounding the country have restored their hope. Pastoralists in Namanga too are now trying their hand at crop production as an alternative livelihood instead of relying entirely on livestock. And as NTVs Rose Wangui reports, the recent drought has forced the maasais to let go of traditional culture.

  • One correction please Rose Wangui, Pastoral farming is also agriculture. What you need to say in your reporting is the change from nomadic Pastoralism into arable farming and not change to agriculture.

Well, this is good reporting Rose and its all about the problem of climate change and climate change adaptation. Our Maasai brothers needs to diversify and try their hands in arable farming after all its all about human well being and livelihoods. We are proud of the Maasai as always.

  • @ siasabora: In spite of options being limited, you will agree with me, the Maasai ancestors must have looked into the pros and cons of various economic options before they opted for cattle keeping. The cattle that are dying in Maasailand are those of the near-landless pastoralists. There are numerous foreign-owned and Rich-Kenyan Owned cattle ranches in the area that do not suffer a similar stock demise. Something is wrong somewhere and crop farming is not right.

  • @333 there are no other options: change or perish...listen to Mzee Samparu here moaning his livestock wiped out by drought.

  • Wacha kuambia Maasai uwongo. Ukulima si kazi ya Wamaasai!!

  • poa!!! new ways to make a living. I'm amazed, some of the older gentlemen in the community are in very good shape.

  • very sad indeed cant somebody help retain this remaing culture .mtalima wapi na nchi yenu ilinyakuliwa?

  • kumbe wewe wangui najua kulima..hero wewe takuwa bibi musuri..

  • Hata simba akikosa nyama nakula nyasi...na Wangui u use a forked-jembe hapana regular jembe, utakata mimea yote!

  • Ero mimi hapana cheka bure, lol!
