Chocolate Doom is the first Doom port to support the old PC speaker sound effects. Here the PC speaker is being emulated through the sound card through SDL.

  • Hey i need some help please! I used to be a huge fan of doom back in the day and i want to start playing again! I downloaded Chocolate doom but it doesnt do anything when i run it. Do i need to install the doom games to actually play again? I used to have doom 1 and 2, but i dont know where the cd roms are anymore and i never got final doom on pc either (and i really wanna play final doom on pc because the psx version sucks) How do i get this to work so i can get back in the action again?!!

  • @TheWaynelds Yes, Chocolate Doom is just a source port. You still need the WAD files from the original games to play them.

If you can't find the CD-ROMs you once had you can buy the games really cheaply on Steam; alternatively you can download the shareware WAD for free.

  • hmm.....I don't understand this, the original doom already supports pc speaker sounds, why would you need a port or a mod?

  • @kainthevampireduck Chocolate Doom is the first source port to support PC speaker sound effects. The original Doom doesn't work properly on modern operating systems unless you use an emulator.

  • Fuck, this brings back memories! For quite a while, I didn't have a pair of speakers.

Wow... I wish it was the 1990s again. Before all this Call of Duty crap.

  • DOOM sounds more like Commander Keen now.

  • Sounds like my old Windows XP computer.

Ever since I got Windows 7, I downloaded Doom on it and I heard better sound O_O

I miss the sound of nostalgia!

  • Bittersweet tears of nostalgia just rolled down my cheek.

  • Whenever I boot MS-DOS from a USB Drive on my laptop that is the only option for sound that I have since this is a new laptop which doesn't have sound drivers for MS-DOS. I do wish there was a way to lower the beeping because it is freaking loud. Some of the music sounds really good even with this music composing program I downloaded but it is ear bleeding because of the loud volume. I saw an option on the Boot setup menu for spkr volume and it doesn't seem to be for the PC Speaker.

  • I had this kind of sound with Wolfenstein 3D and Commander Keen, but I got a new PC before Doom came out and luckily didn't receive anymore ear rape.

  • PC SPEAKER RULZ

  • @fragglet thank you for the response and i'll check that resource out soon. I really just want Final Doom though because they did a shitty job on the playstation version.

  • My ears, they burn.
