The 1st series was about WWII and the Yamato getting a second chance and kicking blue ass. By Final Yamato it was just an Epic Finale to an Independant Sci-Fi / Spaxe Opera

The animation and battle scenes in this one are incredible. It was as if they threw everything and the kitchen sink into making this as epic as possible. It ran a little long, but damn, that last scene was awesome.
