Baby squirrel rescue, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

A man found a baby squirrel in Hollywood. He put it in a little garden thinking he'd be okay. She is obviously too young to be on her own. I followed his instructions and found her in front of an abandoned bank. We are licensed wildlife rehabilitators. She will be released back to the wild when able. Just curious, what do you feed your squirrel babies ? If you were to handraise a baby mouse what would you feed it ?

@MaryCummins Your baby squirrels don't seem to go through a scruffy stage, they do really well. Do you buy powdered or ready mixed? When you handraise a mouse do they look very ratty for a while ? I have handraised three mice so far from pinkies and all three went through a scruffy stage. I wish I knew how to avoid this, to have them look as good as your baby squirrels do just after weaning. My little mice catch up to grow into healthy looking mice, but the handraising is hard on them.........

@CreekValleyCritters Mice seem to dehydrate on me easily. They can look scruffy. As soon as they can eat on their own they plump up quickly. I feed powdered puppy milk. Some people mix heavy whipping cream for more fat and calories. It's possible pinky mice need more fat and calories. That's why Fox Valley sells two formulas, one for very young squirrels, one for older squirrel babies.

@elizombiee I made a device out of a wire coat hanger which I attach to a tiny gorilla tripod. I attach that to my neck and it sits under my chin. No other way to film myself feeding unless I put a tiny tripod on my desk.

@TheProtoman17 May I clarify some things? MarryCummins is a LICENSED WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR. This baby squirrel is OBVIOUSLY abandoned by its mother. A person FOUND this squirrel, THEREFORE placed the squirrel there and ASKED MarryCummins to TAKE IT/SAVE IT. The squirrel IS dehydrated, not everything on the web is fake! The squirrel would NOT take the fluid if it is not dehydrated! So it took more than 3 syringes, PROVING that it is DEHYDRATED. Leaving the squirrel there to die ISN'T nature :(
