I think his original comment made no sense, rather than being offensive, but I love the way he spins a story out of it, and his telling of any anecdote is pure gold.

Obviously not when it's derogatory or intended to be hurtful. But there's a difference between beating someone up because they're black and laughing because someone's accent is a bit silly. I'm willing to admit that, as Australians, our accent can sound pretty stupid, and I can take someone laughing at it (good-naturedly, of course).
And Robin Williams is a great comedian. You don't have to find him funny yourself, but there's no denying his talent.
