I would add that a key element of CP getting signed was EMI becoming disinterested in 'Flashman', the band managed by Cerne Canning, who'd been demoing for Parlophone for 12 months. Coldplay supported Flashman at the Borderline in March 1999. Andy Ross (Food Records) had been pushing Miles Leonard to sign FM for months but as a result of FM having a stinker and CP a blinder (in front of Leonard and Woozencroft) the emphasis was switched to signing CP to EMI. True story. The rest is history.

Coldplay is aloud to mix things up a bit when they want... it doesn't mean that they're trying to play pop music for ratings. Viva la Vida (which isn't pop) isn't their only song (Cemetaries? 42? Prospekt? they seem like the slower "old songs) Their albums are continuously speeding up, but they haven't lost any quality, and they'll continue to make the"old" kinds of songs. Their music experiments with sound and it's all brilliant!!
Simon Williams is a hero. He got Coldplay and Keane to fame. Also, once, Coldplay and Keane played the same day, on the H&A I think... I wish that video was out there.
