What does this top grossing North American phenomenon have to teach us about the nature of good and evil?

It happens so regularly that it's predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God's commands, but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge. I've tried everything and nothing helps. I'm at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me?
St. Paul in Romans 7:21-24, MSG

But Gotham needs a hero with a face...

This city just showed you that it is full of people willing to believe in good."

(Common Grace (defn) - [The Holy Spirit] restrains for the present the deteriorating and devastating influence of sin in the lives of men and society, and enables men to maintain a certain order and decorum in their communal life, to do what is outwardly good and right in their relations to each other, and to develop the talents with which they were endowed at creation.
Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology, p426

He [God] causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Jesus in Matthew 5:45, NIV

  • Whether you go with Calvin or Kuyper's language, wouldn't any movement of God in his creation be of a gracious nature? How could God, being who he is, act in any other way?

  • By "Common Grace" I mean the Three Points Of Common Grace presented by the CRC Synod of Kalamazoo back in the 1920's. As for Abraham Kuyper (Kuyperian common grace), if the shoe fits...

However, does the shoe fit? Have you read Heman Hoeksema and Henry Danhof's "Sin & Grace"?

  • Red Beetle: What are your thoughts on the Calvinist heavy hitter, Abraham Kuyper? Was he a heretic?

  • Your comment section looked so lonely, so I thought I would leave you a gracious comment:

    Common Grace is heresy.

It is not Biblical. You are confusing God's providence with His attribute of grace. Grace is not the sending of rain, nor is it the sending of starvation. When God governs His universe, then the Heidelberg Catechism correctly identifies this to be providence, not grace.

    Grace is always saving.

See my channel page for more information on Calvinism.
