THIS PROJECT IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE GREATEST! What do you think about choosing de Luca? Please comment!

Giuseppe de Luca, Baritone (1876-1950)

Giuseppe Verdi - La Traviata
Di provenza il mar
(Recorded 1929)

My personal opinion: Battistini once signed him an autograph "with great admiration for my friend Giuseppe de Luca" - A great singer don´t need many words. Just listen de Luca and you know why! All I can say about his recording is: Marvelous! De Luca saved the old belcanto school into the 20th century.

  • What a great artist De Luca was, worthy of any list of great singers! Perhaps his voice was not as stentorian as Ruffo's or Stracciari's,

but his bel canto style, phrasing, technique, and vocal color are impeccable.

  • The ART of SINGING. De Luca's artistry, beautiful tone quality and Chiaroscuro are all symbolic of the Golden Era which cannot be heard on any operatic stage .

  • Toscanini said of De Luca, "He is absolutely the best baritone I ever heard." Certainly at his best his voice possessed exceptional beauty of tone in the middle register and he was a master of lyric, smooth-toned legato singing.

  • splendid. doesn't take it too fast like the modern recordings.

Chapeau a De Luca

  • I feel like I'm floating on smooth seas listening to him.

  • What an intelligent comment from cantormatis....thank you for your sensitivity and decency. This site is a treasure trove for lovers of the vocal art, sadly marred by the many fatuous and ignorant comments, even vitriol, so often heaped on worthy artists and decent human beings.
