ok, I've actually been studying woodpeckers for a project at university and I did not come across this kind of anatomy, but the tongue of most woodpeckers is stored curled around the skull. It doubles back on itself and exit's via the beak, allowing it to be extended far out when required. In some cases the tongue goes right between up to the front between the bird's eyes before it loops back. Is it really such a mutation that the tongue just goes straight into the beak without looping?

@ItzCashew Yeah but if a tongue that loops around the head is to have evolved to that point, somewhere down the line that tongue would have been unusable and the bird would have starved to death. It could not have evolved behind the head looping around without making the bid unable to eat.
