Benny Goodman and Peggy Lee's "Blues in the Night" set to footage of classic 1950's animated film.

Lyrics(doesn't include dialog from movie):

My mama done tol' me,
When I was in pigtails,
My mama done tol' me, Hon!
A man's gonna sweet talk
And give ya the big eye;
But when the sweet talkin's done,
A man is a two face
A worrisome thing
Who'll leave ya t'sing
The blues in the night

Now the rain's a-fallin',
Hear the train a-callin'
Whoo-ee
Hear that lonesome whistle
Blowin' `cross the trestle,
Whoo-ee
A whoo-ee-duh-whoo-ee, ol' clickety clack's
A-echoin' back the blues in the night

From Natchez to Mobile,
From Memphis to St. Jo,
Wherever the four winds blow,
I been in some big towns,
An' heard me some big talk,
But there is one thing I know
A man is a two face,
A worrisome thing
Who'll leave ya t'sing the blues in the night.

  • God I adore Peggy Lees voice!

While doing credits though, can we add that Wiliam Gillespie was the first artist to record this song? Lots of people don't know that it was first sung by a man.

  • Can we have a credit to Johnny Mercer who wrote the lyrics and Harold Arlen who wrote the music please? Otherwise people might think that Peggy Lee was responsible for lyrics and music. Oh and by the way it was Johnny Mercer who got Peggy Lee out of retirement and encouraged her to write.

  • figures...Johnny Mercer!

  • A former lover used to sing it for me. I'll always remember that she sang: A man is a two-face

  • Great song!!! Long live the Blues!!!!!!!!!

  • @flanaganjr I agree! Daffy's version is the first I heard as a little girl, I just bought the Looney Tunes Golden Collection JUST for this song! :D I'm sure the rest of the collection will be great as well.

  • wow!!!

  • Benny Goodman and Peggy understood the imagery of music and lyrics -- in this instance it's an allegorical life TRAIN. Listen to instrumentation, the changing emphasis, the long blue notes, and the rhythm. Others, such as Ellington, Calloway, and Ella Fitzergerald, understood this with masterful presentations. Some modern artists also have a very good grasp of this standard, but most really don't get it. Thank you, for a very nice video.

  • So, so epic.

  • Amazing voice and amazing song! Young Peggy Lee had one of the very best voices ever! I mean I love a lot of female singers but she is like on my top 3 of all time list with a teenage Judy Garland!

  • Solid, Jackson! Many thanks for posting this delightful "blast from the past"! If Benny & his boys & the lovely Miss Lee had been any more cool, they'd have been frozen! Strictly from wowsville, daddy-o! :)

  • Mercer and Arlen were great with this song, alot of people dont know Mercer was one on the greatest lyricist of all, him and a couple of his buddies started Capitol Records also.
