I heard he was replaced by a robot because the fans didn't want Joe to die. Like with Sven probably with Voltron and someone took his place in the series. Of course he looks like Sven.

However, he was so popular that they brought him back in the sequel Cartoon series, "Gatchaman II" (part of this show was shown in the mid-late 90s in the US/North America, and other parts of the world as "Eagle Riders").
