Thanks you beenaam for letting me mirror it :)

Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, all of the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result, and all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon the monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be attacked.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.

Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey. After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana.

Why not? Because as far as they know, thats the way its always been done around there.

  • You can't really equate monkeys with humans. Stupid humans, maybe. There's always been and always will be those unique individuals who aren't that easily discouraged, who don't blindly follow the crowd. If that were the case, we would not be here now, would we??

  • @ladyfuschia

Yeah, I could agree, but it seems more of a culture problem than of individuals. I think monkey challenge hierarchies in their environment. They are acting like that because of our intervention, punishment is too scary for them to cope with, like primitive people and thunder. Humans don't question authorities enough for my taste. Taboos are specific to humans, though.

  • Simple but effective!

  • @bettySwollox I'm glad you like it.

  • @mascotasydemasbichos you do realize these aren't actual monkeys right? they look like blender monkeys..

  • That's culture!

  • @ladyfuschia

This experiment can easily be related to humans. While some people don't go out and do crimes because they're wrong, most don't for fear of being fined or imprisoned. Even if a group of people are being abused they often wont stand up and fight back for fear of punishment. It is odd to me that people support police using extremely excessive force against some protesters who like to yell, hold signs, and increase your commute time by 10 minutes.

  • You fucking asshole, leave the animals alone. Get yourself in a cage and cut your dick

  • @whatawooki google "monkey experiment ladder" and you will find it

  • @2canines Hi. I'm looking for the source also, would you mind sharing? Thanks

  • @organdva I would have to take the experiment further. First, I would increase the number of monkeys added into the cage and see if there came a point when the monkeys forgot about the "punishment" and perhaps held back from participating in the attack on the new member. Also, would there ever come a point when the formerly frightened monkeys would jump to defend the newbie? Add the stimulus of a monkey outside of the cage calmly eating a banana w/o punishment. Many options to try. Hmmm....
