It's August 2, 1492. You're standing on a narrow street in the town of Palos, a port city on the coast of Spain.
"Look out, fool! Move! I'm in a hurry!"
You spin around and see a heavy wagon coming straight at you! In the nick of time you jump aside, and the wagon rumbles past. You notice that it's filled with big jars of wine and oil.
The day has just begun, but there's excitement in the air. People are running toward the docks. Some donkeys trot by, loaded with crates of food. There are carts and horses everywhere.
"That's him! That's Columbus!" A boy pokes you with his elbow and points.
You see a group of men in capes and boots coming down the street. You recognize one of them by his long hair and flat round hat. You're standing only a few feet from Christopher Columbus, the great explorer himself!
The men head toward the waterfront with a crowd following them. You know from history that Columbus is about to leave on a dangerous voyage. He's been trying to raise money for this journey for many years. Finally King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain have agreed to help him. They've paid for ships to carry him west across the Atlantic--which in 1492 is called the Ocean Sea.
You join the crowd heading toward the docks.
"The fleet is sailing today!"
"If you ask me, the man is mad."
"He claims he'll find China and Japan by going west."
"All he'll find are sea monsters!"
"He might even sail off the edge of the world!"
As you get near the shore, you can see the wooden masts of Columbus's three ships. There they are, almost ready to leave!
This is the moment you've been waiting for. Now you can slip on board and sail with Columbus!
