As if it wasn't exciting enough having The Police play Fenway Park, Boston residents got another treat when guitarist Andy Summers exhibited his photography at Newbury Fine Arts. CN8's Backstage with Barry Nolan Producer/Editor Charlene Love has the story.

A number of things made the Police one of the 4 great rock bands of the 20th century. One of them was Andy's departure from boring fuzzy blues based guitar solos that dominated the music scene at the time. Hearing his playing was like drinking pure fresh cold water on a hot day instead of sticky cola or foamy beer. His playing is dominant without being over bearing. When a guitar player starts bending strings, he has run out of things to play. I think he was a big influence on Peter Buck.

I saw the Police in a club in 1980. My friends wouldn't go with me because they didn't want to see "some crappy punk band". Their loss was my gain. The Police had a lot of energy back then. Iv'e made a point of seeing great bands for cheap since the late 60's. Saw SRV in 1984 in a club too.

I met Summers in the bar after a small venue gig in scotland. Tiny bloke-didnt say much.

@Janko1492 I agreed with most of that... up to the "when a guitar player starts bending strings he's run out of things to play" bit..... I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a Hendrix song that isn't full of bends and it'd be naive to say he was running out of things to play. If you'd like to look at the other end of the spectrum... many of radiohead's guitar parts are literally just long bends....

@Janko1492 defenitely man, thats why we all wants to copy his guitar style because that will make you different and above the rest. but his style is his own and his riffs are impossible to capture just by hearing it.
