  • The literal meaning of khan-chhiu is holding [your] hands. In Hoklo,

it means "wife." The term is in common use by older generation. There

are several terms that are used to mean wife in Hoklo, such as "bóo,"

    "thài-thài," "tsa-bóo-lâng," "ke-āu," among many others, but

"khan-chhiu" could be the one that is beautiful, not derogatory, and

has profounding meaning than just wife/ spouse.

  • It means that "[i]

will be together with you in your journey through life," which I think

can be translated to "甲你牽手一世人," the subtitle that appeared at the end

of the video which promotes life insurance.

There are many Hoklo songs about khan-chhiu.

  • "甲你牽手" pronounce as ga li kan-chiu and means exactly "to hold your hand". "一世人" means one's whole life.

As for the terms used to refer to one's wife, all except "thai-thai" were already in use before the Chinese mainlanders arrived in Taiwan after Japan's defeat. The mainlanders introduced this particular term.

  • 第一句出來就雞皮疙瘩了
