(Tx 22 Oct 09) In the world of endurance running there's half-marathon, full marathon and then Ultra-marathon. Many of those races can cover several hundred kilometres, often through difficult terrain... and they demand not only top physical fitness but also the psychological determination needed to push through the exhaustion and pain and cross the finish line.
For Ultra-marathon runner Lisa Tamati, pushing her body beyond its limits is what she does, every time she competes in one of these races. In her new book 'Running Hot', Lisa describes her passion for endurance running and also describes some of her races through the world's most remote areas. Not a bad effort from a woman who's asthmatic and also, officially, doesn't have the physique to be a serious athlete.
Cathy Jenke spoke to Lisa last year after she became the first New Zealand woman to complete The Badwater Challenge, through Death Valley in California - and spoke to her again recently, after she'd completed the Death Valley run for the second time.
