Professor fired from Emmanuel College in Boston for discussing anti gun control ideas and disgust with the media circus in general about Virginia Tech talks about his frustration with political correctness and prissiness in general.
I have mixed opinions. First, I have had teachers (and pastors for that matter) that would bring their political views into their lesson/preaching. This always garnered a nice wtf when you finally got out of there. Now on the other hand, you are a teacher. It is your job to evoke creative intellectual thought. So with that I think its wonderful if you want to bring a view point even a far skewed one to light. I noticed that you mentioned in an earlier video how many die in iraq;they die so
I think everyone is missing the point here. I dont think he was fired for his views on gun control. He was fired because he was giving his political views in class instead of doing his job which was to teach economics. Even if the gun issue was in the context of what he was teaching. Its not a teachers job to sway students one way or the other.
Okay, now I'm just starting to watch this third one, and I just wanna say that I'd of given anything for a teacher like you when I was younger. Will post again when I'm done with this one.
The guy is an economics prof (...I think thats what I heard)...and his point is that although horrific events like this take place, from an economic point of view it has no effect. Colleges and Universities are exactly the place to discuss and debate these issues. If you want to give the guy an insensativity award then have at it...but to dismiss with no oversight or review...talk about draconian.
people need to upload more clips like this. I prefer funnier stuff myself, check out dolphinhump. lostfrog . com , I laughed so hard I got kicked out of class! haha.
Well, lets look to the UK for the results of a pretty much overall weapon ban.
The British Crime Survey: violent crimes involving knives in 2005/2006 was, at 169,000, around half the level of 340,000 in 1995, though it had increased on 2004 - 2005 and had been rising since the previous year
There is little doubt that gun crime, particularly handgun crime, has more than doubled since 1997 - again despite legislation, in the form of a post-Dunblane ban on handguns.
Regarding Sarbanes Oxley being more "controversial" than Virginia Tech: I think I understand your logic, but to accept the fact that V Tech arouses more emotion than pension funds is not to buy into the media hype that you perceive, but to acknowledge the fact that human beings respond to certain kinds of stimuli more than others (visceral over statistical). To assume otherwise is be ignorant of a basic trait of human behavior.
