Engine Noise...What is it?

Lifter tick? Doesn't seem like rod knock since everything seems to say that's fairly loud/expensive sounding. Possibly the timing chain? How about an exhaust manifold leak (bad gasket)?

It makes the noise all the time, doesn't quiet down when the engine warms up, so that pretty much rules out piston slap. I first noticed it ~1000mi ago when I had the new exhaust put on (old one was either too loud to hear it, or the noise didn't start until new exhaust went on), and it has only gotten louder since then.

Edit to add: It turns out the ticking was a loose spark plug. It had backed out of its hole & tightening it back up fixed the problem.

that noise is not lifter or rods its the whole piston!!! as i found out last nite my car comletely blew up and my 3100 had just got the oil changed! i suggest disposal of it. becuz i thought the car wud have been fine after the noise stops, but i was wrong and i had a 15k walk home after that. so u shud consider it or u may regret it. P.S i loved my gm but she didnt love me...

The knocking sound is piston slap. 3100's were made with excesive piston to cylinder clearance with the idea of reducing wear. As the engine warms up and the metal expands the knocking sound is suppose to diminish.

as one of the comment said all 3.1 make the noise i think is the lifter or the injector

Im an IT Engineer and I'da guessed an IP conflict.... or loose spark plug.

try rislone, you can get it at most autostores , iget mine at crappy tire,my truck had really noisy lifters and it made it run a lot quieter . worth a shot since its only $10

My 3100 has 150k on it and was noise free til it ran hot , now it has a ticking sound.

if its ticking when you drive it could be the gear box..right?
