Do you live in Collin County, Tx? A video about the change needed at Collin County Animal Shelter. About Supporting positive change at Collin County Animal Shelter Description Established in 2006, Collin County Animal Shelter was constructed under the model of being a stray hold facility and SPCA of McKinney handling adoptions. Less that a year later it became apparent that SPCA would not have room for such a high influx of animals. This shelter services all unincorperated areas of Collin County as well as the towns of: Anna, Celina, Fairview, Lavon, Lowry Crossing, Lucas, Melissa,Nevada,New Hope,Princeton, Prosper,McKinney, Frisco and Farmersville. No formal adoption program is in place, and the shelter does not market themselves in any way. You CAN adopt for no fee, and animals are handed out unsterilized. There is no vet on staff, so animals are euthanized for communicable diseases instead of treated. The shelter is proud of their "model" of allowing and completely relying on rescue groups to handle adoptions, and boast of their low eu rate compared to other shelters. We hope with this page to educate the public that encompass this shelter that there is a better way. CCAS required major reform the second SPCA could not handle their adoptables, but continue to pass the buck. From August 2010 to August 2011, CCAS took in 5552 puppies, dogs, kittens and cats 8.3% were adopted 20.59% were redeemed 53.51% went to rescue groups 1.10% were sent to SPCA 21.69 were euthanized Imagine if their were a proactive, marketed adoption program in place reaching the thousands in all of the growing cities.... Rescue groups are stretched way beyond their means and the county should not burden those in place with much more limited resources. Rescues should be utilized for those left behind. Do not let them tell you budget cuts keep them from improvements, adoption fees will not only support the expense but will also provide additional revenue for the county! Do not let them tell you about their low eu rate, look at the faces in the albums of highly adoptable animals killed for space or sickness which would have had a chance to be treated if vet on staff or adopted if the public was aware of this shelter! Don't let them tell you stronger spay and neuter laws need to be made, tell them to write them and enforce them! The wave of the future is not the status quo at CCAS for animal sheltering. A wealthy, growing, up and coming county as this should have a fantastic facility with a proactive adoption program striving to be no kill. It is high time to demand change and only the voters, tax payers, and citizens will be heard. This is not a new idea! Look at the many cities and shelters reforming themselves. This is happening all over the state and country as it is the RIGHT THING TO DO! Look at Austin! San Antonio! And even closer to home the same fight is being won in Rockwall! Please voice your concern for those who cannot speak for themselves.
