@greyflcn, We're better off without it. Read "The Separation of Commercial and Investment Banking" by Alexander Tabarrok. It mentions a study that looked at the failure rate of banks from 1930-1933 with and without security affiliates, and found that banks without security affiliates were four times more likely to fail.

@Moose - That 'massive leverage' was provided by the repub govt that took away most of the regulations/rules/laws that legitimate businesses have to follow so that the 'free market' money grubbers could do as they wished, which was to take the public for as much profit as possible with very little actual return. The CEO's of these companies don't care about their customers, they only care about personal profits and pay off anyone they can to ensure they get it.
