In 1845 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Osborne House and its 1000 acres. Osborne House was a retreat for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. They greatly enjoyed the Isle of Wight, far from the pressures court life at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, Queen Victoria's favorite retreat. After Albert died, Queen Victoria spent most of her time at Osborne House and she died there in 1901.
Since her death little has changed at Osborne and many of the royal couple's possessions, photographs and paintings are still at Osborne House.

  • The house was always the favourite of Victoria, who spent many summer months there. It became the nearest thing to a family home her children were to know. The grounds include a 'Swiss Cottage' complete with rooms built on miniature scale for use by the Queen Victoria's children. The children also had their own adjoining garden.

  • The house was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat. Prince Albert designed the house, demolishing a smaller house to make room for the larger one. Victoria died in the house, which was then considered surplus and was given to the state.

  • Actually the house was "technically" bought. The original Osborne House stood in the same place when they bought it before Albert approached Thomas Cubitt to help design their new home. :]

  • Good Video, but the house wasn't bought by Albert, it was designed and built by him. He also Built Balmoral Castle, headed the design committee for the reconstruction of Westminster and the originil Crystil Palace to house the Great Exhibition. and that's only off the top of my head.

  • I went there yesterday, it was very interesting and the Winterhalter painting of Queen Victoria was stunning artwork indeed!

  • i found very mediteranean this house!

  • It is a very stunning villa. It is a shame that the queen became such a recluse after Albert's death. I read that he was the architect of Osborne, if he hadn't married the queen of england, he could have been a really successful architect.
