Mel was scheduled to be euthanized last week, but 17 year-old Amy, a volunteer, said no. She developed a relationship with this shy 4 1/2 year-old Border Collie and was determined to find someone to take him. She said she made at least 18 phone calls to rescues only to be told everyone was full. When she called me, she was in tears and begging. When I said yes, she screamed and started to cry even more.

Amy took the bull by the horns. She found a groomer willing to donate her time and skills and Mel went through 4 hours of serious grooming. Then, Amy managed to get a local pet store to donate toys and a new collar for Mel. But her job still wasn't done. Next, she asked her own Dad to drive her were Mel could be fostered and adopted. How could her Dad say no? Mel is gorgeous. Once Amy announced that she was going to personally drive Mel to Pet Rescue by Judy, someone stepped up and sponsored the cost of the trip.

It was a pleasure for me to meet Amy and her Dad. They are both clearly animal-lovers and were so proud to have saved Mel from being killed.

Mel was owner-surrendered, and because he is a bit slow to warm up, he was never adopted at the shelter. After spending several weeks there, he was never adopted. But Amy knew better. Amy knew that Mel was deserving of a second chance. Amy was right.

Mel has been with me now for only a few days, and he is remarkably trained. It's experiences like these that make me feel good when things are so bad right now for homeless animals. Thank you Amy.

  • You wonderful angel. Mel is absolutely gorgeous. Then again, I adore border collies. Blessings.

  • Border collies are the best!

  • Mel's original owner has been in contact with us and is so relieved that he has found another wonderful forever home! When Mel's family developed a life-threatening allergy toward dogs, it left his family devastated. Now, they know that Mel is safe and loved!

  • Mr. Mel was evaluated today by Animal Behaviorist Paul Pipitone. Paul thinks we need to call him Mr. Mello!
