So I had to cover this song. Its a song that all to often I've heard 'christians,' especially leaders, say that they are sick of it. I was defiantly among that number; however, the song is now my second favorite praise song of all time and the one that I lead the most. My 'change-of-mind/heart' toward this song came during some time spent in Taiwan. Some of my family is among the Puyama native aboriginal tribe living in the mountains around the south of Taiwan. A group of friends and I were invited, by my family who work with the churches, to come and join them as guest pastors and leaders as they hosted a youth event. We were asked to prepare some games, praise, and testimonies/sermons. The games and the testimonies/sermons were simple in terms of technicality compared to the praise. We realized that we had no idea what to sing because of the language barrier. None of my 3 companions spoke Mandarin, Taiwanese, or any of the Native Languages; I only spoke decent mispronounced Mandarin that could help us survive but not nearly enough to sing let alone lead praise with. Nonetheless we were still asked to do it. We had one song that we knew they knew and that was 'Amazing Grace,' after that we were at a loss. I'm not quite sure how it happened but in an act of grace we realized that the congregation could sing the hymn 'How Great Thou Art.' So I reckoned we could just teach them 'How Great is Our God' which I'd been singing for my family who didn't know it but absolutely loved it. Turns out there is a Mandarin translation of the song which we then found and sang with the church. It was an absolutely amazing experience hearing praise sung in multiple languages. The three songs that we played were 'Amazing Grace,' 'How Great Thou Art' and 'How Great is Our God.' I will never forget the absolute beauty of hearing 'Amazing Grace' and 'How Great Thou Art' sung in four languages; however the memory of "How Great is Our God" will always be close to my heart. I can only kind of stumble my way through the chorus of the song in Mandarin. Which bring me to the embarrassing portion of this story. The word '大' or 'da' in Mandarin means big. I kind of misheard the lyrics the first time we sang through and kept wondering why the translator chose to translate the song as "My God is really Big." It actually says "My God is really Mighty" cause the this word '伟' (wei) + '大' (da) makes the word Mighty. However, my mistake got me to realize that "My God is really Big" isn't an incorrect statement; I was in Taiwan, halfway around the globe singing a song that I lead in America and Scotland. It brings tears to my eyes every time I sing this song and hear in my memories the Native Taiwanese singing along. So lets just say "My God is really Mighty" & "My God is really Big." Happy Easter =)

why do you say " 'christians' are sick of" the song?
hardr0ck 1 year ago
@hardr0ck well what I meant by "christians' are sick of' the song especially leaders is that as a leader I thought the song was overplayed and therefore 'not good anymore.' Quite a few of my co-leaders shared that sentiment as well. But the issue in reality wasn't with the song wasn't good but that my heart wasn't in the right place. This song taught me to rethink what I thought about praise music and rethink how I lead and chose songs.
