André Campra (1660-1744)
Idoménée
Tragédie lyrique en 5 actes
Version 1731
Livret/libretto : Antoine Danchet

Idomeneo, the fifth of Campras eight tragédies lyriques, premiered at the Paris Opera in 1712 was successfully revived, with some changes made by authors, in 1731.
Mozarts librettist, Varesco, based his libretto on the one by Danchet for the opéra séria Idomeneo. Danchets libretto was inspired by Crebillons tragedy of the same name premiered at the Comédie Française in 1705.

Idoménée, king of Crete, is fated to sacrifice his son, Idamante, to fulfil a vow made to Neptune in return for safe passage during a storm.

Les Arts Florissants, William Christie
Idoménée : Bernard Deletré

Acte IV, scène 4 : Idoménée prays to Neptune to calm his wrath.
