  • Wow, this is a lot of information, thanks guys. Also, was he killed in the Khmer Rouge or what else happened in his life?

  • hey, grateful for your reply - and i do stand corrected for the inaccuracies in my earlier post. Chum Kem indeed studied chemical engineering in Italy and his first wife (with whom he had one son) was italian. According to my sources, in the 70's he started the "Domnoueng Chong Krauy" newspaper which was critical of Lon Nol and he apparently paid the price for aligning himself with the monarchy (15 years jail sentence). i hope other readers will post what they know here too. thanks again.

  • My father's cousin was in jail the same time Chum Kem was and they got to know each other. So all of my knowledge of Chum Kem was what my father told me, so it's probably not entirely accurate cuz this was from a looong time ago, but it's still an interesting story. :D

  • Actually, I think he studied in Italy. He was married to an Italian woman and had encouraged him to enter a singing contest which he had won and they had recorded his songs on vinyl, all sung in Italian. He returned to Cambodia single, introduced the twist at a free concert which got him many fans so the next show he did was a paid one which made lots of sales. I forgot what he did after music but yeah, eventually he became a politician, then prosecuted and sent to jail like you mentioned.

  • hey buddy that's a nice song, i just wish chlangden avoid the crap that they put to the original. Too much drum machine. It ruins the original. Thanks for posting this.

  • The story of Chum Kem will need to be told by someone more knowledgeable than myself. He was a khmer student who received a scholarship to study ceramics in France in the late 50's. He returned home made a name introducing the twist. In around 1971 or 1972 he was prosecuted together with members of the royal family for alledged plots against the Khmer Republic. The song posted here is in the early 70's style. Also i'm not sure this is really Chum Kem himself singing. All IMHO of course.

  • who is Chum Kep? any relation with the one and only Chum Kem, father of cambodian twist in the eraly 60's?
