Unquestionably the greatest player ever, Leigh Matthews was voted Player of the Century and is the greatest goal kicking midfielder to date.

His record of 915 goals for a midfielder will never be bettered.

  • Matthews wasn't the greatest. His tally of 915 goals came from spending half of his career in the forward line. Truth!

  • @VVV123456

Spent his final 3 years in the forward line. Not quite half his career.

  • @VVV123456

Spent his final 3 years in the forward line, and even then played a lot of midfield for a forward. Not quite half his career.

  • @Spocq

I got the clips from various Hawthorn DVDs and Grand Finals. I also looked around on youtube.

  • @Whoknowsuknow Not true, do your research. He didn't play a full year at Full Forward until 1993. Nearly all of his career he played on the Wing or on the Half Forward Flank & only occasional played at Full Forward. He didn't play at Full Forward until 1993 & kicked over 350 goals in first 3 years at Full Forward.

    Best player of all time.

  • @AFFTL Gary Ablett played mostly as a full-forward, even in the 80s. If he wasn't a full-forward in the 80s he was as close to a full-forward as to make virtually no difference.

  • @Almostpwned Hey I was drunk when I wrote that. I meant 350. The point is he was a freak his hole career, look at his stats.

  • @AFFTL 650 goals in three years would average out to over 200 per year...

  • @Almostpwned Not true, he won the Best & Fairest in his 2nd year at Geelong. He played the majority of his career on the Half Forward Flank & the Wing. He only played Full Forward for the last 4 years of his career & kicked over 650 goals in the first 3 years. That's when he he did a lot of spectacular Goals & Marks, but he was a freak his hole career on Half Forward & the Wing.

  • @VVV123456 Greatest player ever. He didn't spend of his career forward line he rested in the forward line.

  • i never saw him play but this video is amazing and even if he did spend half his time in the forward line he still kicked more goals than all but 6 or 7 which is still amazing in my book

  • Leigh Matthews was not the greatest player to play, he actually ruined the career of the greatest player to play. Barrie Robran. A disgraceful late hit causing Barrie to require a knee reconstruction. Lethal Leigh lived up to his name.

  • My grandfathers 88 and barracked for Footscray all his life and has been to a shitload of games and 46 grand finals. If he tells me Matthews is the best ever footballer, i believe him

  • @VVV123456 And Matthews was the toughest player in a far tougher era - was just reminded of that fact myself at 2:10 when the number 44 for North Melbourne took a swing at a hawks player's head. And forget the fact that the game requires more fitness and endurance now, because we should rate players on how they dominated THEIR era. Plus, if you're prepared to write off matthews, let's just trash Coleman, Whitten, Jezza and all the other legends of the game.
