New spectacular James Turrell light and colour installations in Sweden.

One of the worldʼs greatest artists within light, colour and space, James Turrell, has constructed a number of new works. They are together with works from earlier periods exhibited under the title THE LIGHT INSIDE in Järna, south of Stockholm. The show has opened May 15 and will be open daily from 10:00 -18:00 untill october 2 nd.
It is the biggest James Turrell exhibition in decades and spreads out over the large campus of Kulturforum Järna right at the Baltic sea.
Works exhibited include:
A permanent site specific Skyspace named "OUTSIDE INSIGHT which seats around 30 people. It is the first skyspace in Skandinavia, for the time being also the northernmost, something James Turrell was very happy about because of the long twilights at 59 degrees north. It is also the first one using wood on the outside, a tribute to using local materials. A Skyspace is a room designed to be open to the skies, with programmed light sources that interact with colour changes in the sky during twilight times
A large two story Ganzfeld, named AMRTA. A Ganzfeld piece consist of a number of interconnected light and colour filled rooms (entrance room, viewing space, sensing space, exit room) -- it is a walk in light sculpture in which visitors are completely surrounded by changing colours giving, among other things, an impression of infinity. It is the biggest Ganzfeld currently on display worldwide.
A darkspace, named DARK MATTERS is another highlight as there are very few on display on the globe. James Turrell entitles these type of installations as one of his personal favorites. A darkspace is a room of nearly total darkness with light sources so dim that the visitor slowly starts to experience impressions that may be completely self-produced visions or fantasies, The pupils have to adapt for some 10 minutes before the visitors see the instalation. And even then is it "inside"? or is it "out there"? Find out. The Järna darkspace seats 2.
From the wedgework series a new 2011 piece named CROSSING JORDAN is shown.
The London art- talk of the town, from Autumn 2010, the piece BINDU SHARDS, from the Gasworks series is the GAGOSIAN GALLERY contribution to this major show. Bindu Shards is the spherical chamber which explores the relation of exterior light to interior light, a fully immersive visual and auditory work to be experienced by one person at a time. Part of the ongoing Perceptual Cells series, Bindu Shards possesses the same invasive qualities of "behind-the-eyes" seeing as could be experienced in Gasworks (1993) which was first shown at the Henry Moore Sculpture Trust in Halifax, and then at the ICA, London in 1996. In the late 1980s, Turrell resumed work on the Perceptual Cells, which stemmed from his university studies, then continued from 1968 through 1970 as a collaboration with the artist Robert Irwin and two psychologists. Each cell stimulates an experience in which there is no object of perception; the light which is presented is light "not seen." This produces the "Purkinje effect," a transitional patterning that is perceived uniquely during the transition from light to dark.

There is also be an exhibition on Goethe's Colour Theory with interactive colour experiments and a series of outdoor colour installations in the garden. Paintings from Hilma af Klint, the increasingly well renown Swedish artist, will be displayed and a selection of Rudolf Steiner's original blackboard drawings, some of them for the first time ever. The architecture of Järna provides the perfect setting, as it is in itself a colour experience.

SEE! COLOUR! is an initiative of Rembert Biemond organised by Kulturforum Järna Ltd.
