With four pedestrian accidents in the last two months on Hancock Street in North Quincy, police have come up with a novel way to crack down on drivers who sail through crosswalks -- it involves a lady with a baby. In Operation Safe Crossing, launched by police on Tuesday, a plain-clothes detective pushes a stroller -- minus the baby -- on crosswalks to see if drivers will yield. Officers hiding out of sight pull over any offenders. On the first day, police issued 27 written citations and 11 warnings to drivers who either failed to yield at the crosswalk -- which car ries up to a $200 fine -- or who were caught speeding through a school zone.

  • Targetted crosswalk enforcement campaigns are one of the most important tools for promoting pedestrian safety. We have them here in Maryland. If you never enforce the law, drivers learn to ignore the law.
