THAMES: THE BIOGRAPHY meanders gloriously, rather like the river itself. In short, lively chapters Ackroyd writes about connections between the Thames and such historical figures as Julius Caesar and Henry VIII, and offers memorable portraits of the ordinary men and women who depend on the river for their livelihoods.

Peter Ackroyd is one of my all-time favourite writers -- novelist, essayist, biographer. How I wish he would write the Life of Oscar Wilde!! His SHAKESPEARE is my favourite book on that writer -- have it in book & audio form. The only book of his that I did not care for, shockingly, was his study of drag -- found it rather depressing, so I did.
