You are right. He is not constrained by the length of a 78rpm side; and being in the theatre he sings out with an heroic ring that he rarely allowed himself in the studios.
This is a clip from Tauber's last German film, 'Melodie der Liebe'. It was filmed in Berlin during January 1932 and had simultaneous premieeres at the Atrium and Titania Palast on 26 April. He had sung Cavaradossi for the first time at Dresden in 1922 and in Berlin in 1923. In 1924 he sang it with Leider and Amato in Berlin: and in 1927, for the first time in Vienna.
I've always felt this is Tauber's finest of three "E lucevan"s, but this film clip remains somewhat frustrating. I'm still thrilled and grateful that it's now up, but the cutaway reaction shots are too intrusive here, IMO, especially when one reflects on just how effective Tauber's sitting simply at that desk is. A powerful presence. At least, we can savor Tauber's inwardness and his impeccable phrasing throughout, making this an extraordinary foray into Cavaradossi's character.
