Actually, it was real. Aragorn DID have a dream about it in the Rohan camp just before Elrond gave him Anduril, but later when he confronted Sauron through the Palantir, it actually did break when he jerked away from the stone, showing that Aragorn had some of the foresight of the line of Elendil. ;)
