"Excuse me, but what kind of dog is that? He looks just like a big bear!"

Chances are, the questioner has just met an Akita, a Natural Treasure of Japan.

Akitas are most striking and impressive creatures with an attitude of nobility and an appearance of strength and power. Their most noticeable physical characteristic is a large, bear-like head with erect, triangular ears set at a slight angle following the arch of the neck. They have thick, stand-offish coats, and tight cat feet, well knuckled up. Their tails curl over the top of the back in a graceful sweep down the loin, into a gentle curl, or into a double curl. Their colors are rich and clear, like paint on a canvas.

Mature males measure at least 25 inches at the withers and weigh more than 100 pounds. Mature females measure at least 23 inches and weigh approximately 80 pounds.

Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1973, the Akita is a rather new breed in the United States.

While the Akita breed is magnificently stunning this breed is certainly not a breed for everyone.

*HACHIKO!

Oh, that got your attention! Did you just see the movie starring Richard Gere and a cast of Akitas? Now you want one just like that for your very own. Such loyalty, such beauty, you think you can own a living icon of dedication and loyalty like Hachiko and you want one immediately. Did you know that Mr. Gere said that Akitas are not food motivated, not anxious to please you but are stubborn, difficult to train and will work when they can please themselves. Yes, they are all of that and more, so before you run out to buy a Hachiko, please spend some time at this website-- http://www.akitas-4-u.com/ to learn what it's really like to live with an Akita. It's all about preparation, education and willingness to accept these dogs for what they are. This is not a movie, this is life--yours and theirs.

All breeds (mixes too) have some health problems which breeders and owners should screen for. Careful selection of a breeder who does a good job of screening his breeding stock for genetic diseases and defects will give you a much better chance of owning an animal who is not affected by one of these problems. If there is not a direct hereditary relationship for all these problems, there is still definitely a genetic basis for them.

The Akita is an impressive, striking animal, with proud regal bearing, size and strength to match his magnificent looks. The drawbacks of the breed are minimal to those who love these animals, understand their needs and appreciate the loyalty and devotion of the Akita dog. However, they are not for everyone, and if any of the drawbacks go against your nature, or you cannot handle a large, dominant dog, then the breed is probably not for you.

  • All these great comments about good tempered Akitas is wonderful! My breeder only bred her top 10% of dogs, fixing the rest for pets. She does what not enough people do, keep the dogs with the best traits breeding. That is point of dog breeding, using only the tallest Great Danes, shortest Daschunds and Pit Bulls with sweet temperaments, etc.

  • @Jackson0131 Mine adore attention. They stand up on the fence for people to pet them. They are also very loving. My male akita cannot get enough of lap laying and the female just wants to sit next to me with her head in my lap.

  • @lauramae7 I definitely agree! We tried to not let them be food motivated, but trying to reward them with play was like telling them we were done training. They lost interest immediately if we rewarded with play.

  • @fightTHEfaith I have 2 male akitas and they aren't food motivated at all, they'd rather have play as a reward. Really excitable too. I think that to say that all Akitas are stubborn is like saying all black people can rap. You just can't categorise and generalise that way. Just sayin :)

  • My Akitas are definitely food motivated. They are also very sociable, friendly, out-going, and loving, even with kids. They really aren't stubborn, either; a few "no"s and they stop trying. Honestly, what I've read about Akitas really doesn't apply to mine. I think it's the perfect example of nurture vs nature. That is not to say that there aren't Akitas they are aloof and stubborn, just that mine definitely are not.

  • excelente video, tengo ganas de un akita americano.

  • do american akita's like attention and are they affectionate and loving dogs?

and are they good for a one-person dog?

  • My favorite type of dog ;) I grew up with two massive Japanese Akitas, and now I have one of my very own, Koda :)

    Best. Dogs. In. The. World.

  • i love my full blooded akita!@#!@#!@#@
