His musical abilities were truly amateur, and anyone can hear that he always had problems staying on pitch.

Instead, he was a respected, beloved American who was singing about peace, friendship and equality. @gerryono or maybe you mean the song? If you listen carefully to the lyrics of e.g. 'Imagine' you'll see how it fits into Soviet ideology. The same goes for some other songs by John Lennon. There was nothing 'wrong' with this song. The USSR always wanted peace, at least after WW2.
