@forgrant I have an Alvarez acoustic guitar. With the strings on and in tune the neck seems perfectly straight. However at the 12th fret a quarter is loose. I can fit 2 quarters in and its just a small amount of pressure. But with 1 quarter at the 6th fret it touches and at the 4th fret it begins to push the string out.If I lower the strings at the bridge I'm sure the strings will buzz on the first fret when played open. Shoud I replace and raise the nut and lower the bridge? Thanks

awesome! i got a cheap Johnson, set up overseas guitar for christmas. At the time i knew absolutely nothing about guitars and am learning over youtube. now i know the action is really high and hard to play (my fingers kill and there are lots of buzzes). If i can't go to the store ill try this :) ... im just a little scared ill ruin it lol

@tonestar100 Thanks for your response to the video. I'm glad you brouught up a "Cardinal Rule" The rule is actually...."Never CUT all of your strings off of your guitar at one time". Unleashing the 128 lbs of tensle strength can cause problems on even expensive guitars. But, a slow release of tension is a healthy process and helps the neck "Breath" BTW....the title of the video is "How to set up a new guitar" and this process cannot be done with the strings on the guitar. -Cheers
Ive got a westfield acustic and the last fret i can fit a pound coin in and it moves but at the first fret it doesnt fit. Does this mean my guitar is fucked? Or can i do this to fix it?

Checking the 12th fret is the correct place to measure on a new guitar
because we are addressing the angle of neck that can be adjusted with
truss-rod. If you are referring to the first fret as the one next to the
nut, it is a different height and is usually fine on a new guitar.
I hope this helps.

Do you mean the first fret? The one closest to the tuners? If this is the case, you have an issue with the NUT or a high fret.

Tightening the truss-rod puts a back-bow in the neck...righteee...tighteee :)
