Doris Day and Bing Crosby should have recorded this song together, don't you agree? Contrary to the mass of information and downloadable music displayed on the internet, which is all totally incorrect!! This song is actually sung by Johnny Mercer and Margaret Whiting.

There is an old movie made around the same time as this song. Well, there is a scene in the movie that play and act out this song. It's so romantic.

What a sad interpretation. BOTH are consenting adults, interested in continuing their night of romance further. The female lead makes half-hearted excuses but her heart isn't really in them. It's a mutually playful exchange. "What's in this drink" refers to alcohol content and is meant to be humorous with a tinge of sarcasm. It's a shame such a beautiful & adorable song of courtship has been so poorly interpreted by a few jaded members of the roofie generation with no concept of true romance.

I'm sorry, who is talking in a 'southern drawl'? I'm afraid I don't understand you. I know the singer is causing a creeping sensation of your skin, you made that clear several times now. And I don't agree with you. Let's leave it at that.

So talking in a southern drawl is creepy now?

Faffing about aside, I'll conclude what I've been saying: When you are forming an opinion about something, the original intention of that something is not a factor when your brain gauges how creepy or off-putting you find something. And yes, I find his 'jokes' genuinely creepy.

creepy - having or causing a creeping sensation of the skin, as from horror or fear; pertaining to, or characteristic of a person who is a creep.

Conclusion: you call his jokes creepy, I like to consider them funny, flirty and innocent. I'm not going into semantics here if you don't mind, English isn't my native language. Maybe there's a delicate difference between talking creepy and actually being a creep in English, I wouldn't know.

Also you proved my point by calling him a creep. Nowhere did I say this man was a creep. Some people might find guys like that creepy but I grew up in Louisiana - I met dozens of people who would fit this description every year! I wouldn't find him creepy even for what he did because most of the more jovially boisterous southerns don't respect personal space. At best I would find it off-putting because I don't like my personal space invaded.

What? Your original point was 'Intent is very crucial here.' or at least that's what you posted in response to me saying 'However humorous the intent, that does not stop the guy's lyrics from sounding genuinely creepy.' which was a response to someone else saying that it's just a sad interpretation.

My point was intention and interpretation does not matter to what you find creepy.

And I find this song creepy.

My point is that a threat is only a threat when it's meant as a threat. And it's a joke when it's meant as a joke. Obviously the lady in the song doesn't feel threatened, she trusts him - and obviously likes him a lot - and I like to think she had every reason to do so. That's a choice, there's no truth here because it's all fictional.

How are you not getting this.

    I just refuted your point.

The man's intention was to be polite and courteous.

It doesn't matter - you would still find him creepy.

The intention of this song might be tongue-in-cheek humor.

It doesn't matter - I still find jovially sung veiled threats creepy.

You're confirming my point here;-) If a creep says 'I like your hair' I will run. If my collegue says the very same thing I will answer: "Why, thank you! I went to the hairdresser's this morning."

Would the line 'I know what you did last summer' give you the creeps? Not me, I spent the holidays in Switzerland last summer, had a great time. It's the message that counts, not the line. To my friend 'I hope it suits you' obviously meant: "I'm following you, I know exactly what you're spending" and apparently that message included something not pleasant. So she got very angry where I just laughed. Like 'No cabs to be had out there' will just make someone laugh who knows she can trust the guy.
