If it is what I think it's called "oud". It's an instrument with 12 strings so you can make beautiful sound. Its origin is the arabic world, you find the best oud players in Iraq I think. And if you know the awesome band "Tenacious D" you have to listen to the short solo in the song "wonderboy" there you can see how people from the west can benefit, too. :D I like it ;)
