Shake Block Cutter - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CFB3T2?ie=UTF8&tag=shakeblockcutter-... - Helicopter Timber Salvave - Tales from the Frontlines

Hand splitting western red cedar shakes. Not to be confused with red cedar shingles, which are sawn, not split. Much more natural than vinyl cedar shakes and red cedar roofing shakes smell better too. Watch this series of videos and learn how to split shakes using simple hand tools as well as how to install cedar shakes. Ignore local cedar shake prices and build the roof of your house for less.

  • Kool!

  • You can cut your work nearly in half, split one shake from each edge grain side of the block, THEN flip it over, split form each side.

You will have to turn the block over half as many times, especially beneficial if you have some nice blocks, like big ones weighing 200 pounds or more, you don't want to flip them unnecessarily.

  • Awesome!!! I have looked at shakes and wondered how this was done. You make it look easy!

  • That must smell fantastic!
