Forty years ago Eugene McCarthy had the courage to stand up and oppose the Vietnam War. Who will be our Eugene McCarthy now?

  • kipisland, the Nazis came to power by exploiting your kind of stupidity... people who grovel in front of power and authority, people who, for lack of influence over their world, identify with those who actually profit from war, and root them on. Servile right-wing trash is responsible for the rise of Naziism... Sadly, you'll spend the rest of your life getting your history from the History Channel, I'm afraid.

  • We are STILL paying the price for not electing Eugene McCarthy in 1968.

Damn you LBJ. Damn you Daley. Damn you Nixon. And Reagan. And Clinton. And BOTH BUSHES.

I support Dennis Kucinich now in large part because he is the sole heir to the mantle of Eugene McCarthy.

  • The one president-to-be, who could have stopped American establishment and military-industrial complex from getting the taste of war and innocent's blood was Robert F. Kennedy. He also said, that if he wins, he will also include Eugene McCarthy on his side. Both were morally brave men. We need public servants like them in every sphere who can hold out the challenge.

  • McCarthy was right in 1968 and he was right 35 years later.

  • War-making involves not only the spilling of blood, but the expenditure of treasure. The Constitution gives those powers to the Congress. Art. I, Sec. 8, Clauses 11-16. Presidential power today is far beyond what the Founders envisioned, largely because we have a very large, permanent military (something the Founders opposed and did not foresee).

  • Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy R.I.P.: a truly great man. He stood up against LBJ and the Viet War in '68 when no one else in the Democratic Party would. He brought down the mighty Texan's presidency. Then Bobby Kennedy 'came down from the hills after the battle to shoot the wounded' (Murray Kempton). McC's 2.9 million votes were 39% of all Dem primary votes cast vs RFK's 2.3 million/31%). His poll numbers were very strong vs Nixon, much better than the bosses' man and eventual nominee Humphrey.

  • I know. He's the greatest US President ever IMO.

  • if it wasn't for FDR we would be controled by japan or germany

  • how I miss him....a truly great diplomat

  • I had the privilege of meeting Gene McCarthy in 1976. Well after the 68 campaign and he was disillusioned with the Democratic Party. He was witty, articulate and wise. A great American.

  • The US Constitution gives Congress the sole authority to declare war.

The War Powers Act gave the President the authority to order military operations pending a Congressional declaration of war.

    Get your facts straight, blmoodring.

  • Bush had congress vote on the Iraq war. but under the constitution he wasnt required to. (The system can take months, and the constitution grants him the power to declare war, because some situations require imidiate action.)
