you're right. last year's design won't work this year. our junior high design team stepped up to the challenge. wish I could share details but competition is upcoming.

we have the vexplorer
we already added the wrist
but no tank treads
we might do rubberbands
but
we have to pick up coins this year
-
thanks. the driver started with vexplorer, added the wrist and tank treads, then made modifications to optimize the robot's ability to complete the tasks. For example, the front bumper was removed, the center of gravity was moved, and the rubber bands were added in places to enhance grabbing.

GREAT JOB MATE!
Wow that is awsome my team is having so many problems with the robot. When we are going over the bumps we get stuck even with grips any suggestions.

chassis might be too low - use bigger wheels. this requires graduating from vexplorer into home-built bots. Simple vexplorer solution: use claw to lift front wheels off ground while back wheels push/pull far enuf to get over hump. Note on homebuilts: it costs plenty of money, but individual vex parts form the basis for our 2009 bot. The girl in this video drove the 2009 bot yesterday at Regionals and scored full points (coins, batteries, everything) in 2min 20sec - sorry, no video yet.

hey if you move the goals will you get the same score for that goal?

the goal could be placed and could remain anywhere on the field and still would give full points if the objects were placed fully in the goal. Credit the driver for realizing and capitalizing on this opportunity to cut run time.
